GIF Not Animating or Not Opening?
Animated GIF files contain a logical screen descriptor, image blocks and a terminating trailer.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
- 01
Confirm the format
Use File Type Detector to detect GIF87a or GIF89a.
- 02
Check the trailer
Run GIF File Checker to detect a missing 0x3B closing byte.
- 03
Try a compatible viewer
Some photo viewers show only the first frame even when animation is valid.
- 04
Check transfer completeness
An interrupted save can remove later frames or extension blocks.
- 05
Export from the original
If frames are missing, recreate the GIF from the source frames or backup.
Check before repairing.
Run an appropriate browser-side check to understand what can be verified about the file.
Open GIF File Checker ↗What if the file is still broken?
Structural checks can identify evidence of truncation, checksum errors or a format mismatch, but a successful check does not prove every application can decode the file. If critical data is missing, restore from backup, request a new copy or use a reputable specialist with permission to access the content.
For important or sensitive files, retain a copy of the original and document each recovery attempt. Avoid tools that promise guaranteed reconstruction of missing bytes.
For a practical recovery order that minimizes accidental damage, see our safe file recovery checklist. For format-specific limits, see supported formats and test scope.
