CSV Columns Misaligned: Fix Broken Rows
Malformed quoting and inconsistent column counts can cause spreadsheet imports to shift data.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
- 01
Inspect original delimiter
Determine whether the file uses commas, tabs or semicolons before modifying it.
- 02
Choose a sample
Look for quoted values containing commas or line breaks; these can be valid CSV.
- 03
Analyze row widths
Run the CSV Row Repair tool to show rows with different column counts.
- 04
Normalize cautiously
Use the download to pad shorter rows and standardize quoting, without guessing omitted values.
- 05
Reopen and compare
Compare a few critical rows in your spreadsheet before replacing any source file.
Check before repairing.
Run an appropriate browser-side check to understand what can be verified about the file.

Structural checks can identify evidence of truncation, checksum errors or a format mismatch, but a successful check does not prove every application can decode the file. If critical data is missing, restore from backup, request a new copy or use a reputable specialist with permission to access the content.
For important or sensitive files, retain a copy of the original and document each recovery attempt. Avoid tools that promise guaranteed reconstruction of missing bytes.
For a practical recovery order that minimizes accidental damage, see our safe file recovery checklist. For format-specific limits, see supported formats and test scope.
